When Ride1Up first dropped the original Prodigy, it felt like they’d found a glitch in the ebike pricing matrix. Most mid-drive bikes equipped with a high-end German motor like a Brose were (and still are) sitting in the $4,000 to $5,000 range. By offering that same silent, torque-heavy performance for under $2,300, the Prodigy became an instant favorite for riders who wanted “bike shop” quality without the bike shop invoice.

Now that the Prodigy V2 has been out for a bit, the conversation has shifted. Ride1Up didn’t just give it a fresh coat of paint; they redesigned the frame, standardized the suspension, and added some serious “quality of life” upgrades. But they also added weight, and quite a bit of it.

If you’re coming from a hub-drive bike (the ones with the motor in the back wheel), the Brose is going to feel like a revelation. Most hub motors have a “push” that feels like a scooter. The Brose, however, uses an internal belt drive that makes it nearly silent and incredibly smooth. The base V2 uses a MicroSHIFT Advent 9-speed drivetrain. It’s a solid, workhorse groupset. It’s mechanical, clicky, and any bike shop in the country can fix it for cheap. If you like the feeling of traditional shifting and want to keep the price tag lower, this is a great setup.

The Belt Drive (Prodigy V2 LX):
This is the “fancy” version. For an extra few hundred bucks, you get a Gates Carbon Belt Drive paired with an Enviolo CVT hub.

  • No Grease: You can ride in your work khakis without worrying about a grease stain.
  • Stepless Shifting: There are no “gears” to click through. You just twist a dial on the handlebar to find the exact resistance you want.

The Verdict:
If you’re a daily commuter, the belt drive is a dream. The original Prodigy had a belt option, but it was harder to find and didn’t feel as “integrated” as it does on the V2.

Suspension and Tire Changes

The original Prodigy came in three flavors: the XR (step-over), the ST (step-through), and the XC (cross-country). The XC was the only one with real off-road chops.

With the V2, Ride1Up basically merged all three into one “do-everything” hybrid.

Air Suspension:
Instead of a cheap “coil” fork, the V2 comes with a 100mm travel air fork. This is a big deal because you can actually pump air into it to adjust the “squish” based on your weight. It transforms the ride quality from “harsh” to “buttery.”

The Rubber:
The V2 ships with Maxxis Rekon Race 27.5” x 2.25” tires. These are wider and grippier than the old street tires. They look fantastic with the tan walls, but they also give you the confidence to take a shortcut through a gravel park path without feeling like you’re going to slide out.

The V2 upgrades to Tektro Orion 4-piston hydraulic brakes. With four pistons pushing the pads instead of two, you get significantly more stopping power and better “modulation” (the ability to slow down gently without locking up the wheels). Upgrade to the Prodigy V2 if: You want a dedicated, low-maintenance commuter that can handle more than just flat pavement. The combination of the air fork, 4-piston brakes, and the belt drive option makes the V2 feel like a much more expensive bike… more like a Specialized Vado or a Gazelle.
