The Ultimate Electric Cargo Bike Comparison

Posted on December 6, 2023October 23, 2025

Today, we’re diving into the world of cargo ebikes again, specifically focusing on three of the most popular cargo ebikes on the road today: the Rad Power Bikes Radwagon 4, the Lectric Xpedition, and the Aventon Abound. If you’re in the market for a cargo ebike, read further as we explore their features, performance, affordability, and customization options, helping you decide which one might be the perfect fit for your needs. We’ve done extensive reviews on all three of these electric cargo ebikes and have logged heavy mileage on them.

Rad Power Bikes recently announced the release of the Rad Power Bike Radwagon 5 but the Radwagon 4 is still being sold so we’ll keep this article as some buyers will be looking for a comparison of the older Radwagon.

Which is the Cheapest Cargo Ebike?

Starting with the pocket-friendly aspect, the Aventon Abound, currently on sale for $1799, making it $200 cheaper than the Radwagon 4. The Lectric Xpedition comes in at $1349 for the single battery version and $1599 for the dual battery option. While prices are relatively close, it’s the unique features that define the real value of each bike.

Motor Power and Battery Specifications

All three cargo ebikes boast powerful 750-watt motors. However, it’s worth noting that while Lectric doesn’t disclose Newton meters of torque, the Xpedition boasts an impressive 85 Newton meters. The Abound comes close, and the Radwagon appears to be on the lower end in terms of torque.

Moving to batteries, all sport 48-volt systems. Notably, Aventon stands out by using LG cells and obtaining UL compliance for enhanced battery safety. The Radwagon is on its way to achieving the same compliance. It’s a crucial factor to consider if battery safety is a top priority for you.

Sensor Technology: Cadence vs. Torque

When it comes to sensors, both the Xpedition and Radwagon rely on cadence sensors, which is standard among affordable ebikes. Aventon, however, takes a different route by incorporating torque sensors on all its bikes including the Abound. This feature provides a smoother, more natural cycling experience compared to the cadence sensors found in the Radwagon and Xpedition. The torque sensor could be a game-changer, especially for those who find traditional cadence sensors a bit jumpy or unnatural.

Which Electric Cargo Bikes Has the Best Brakes?

Given that cargo ebikes often bear heavy loads, having reliable brakes is essential. Here, the Abound and Xpedition shine with hydraulic brakes, providing superior stopping power. In contrast, the Radwagon opts for mechanical brakes. The Tektro brakes on the Abound outperform the Zoom brakes on the Xpedition. Overall, the Abound emerges as the winner in terms of braking performance among these three contenders.

Frame Design

When it comes to frame and design, each cargo ebike offers a unique proposition. The Radwagon takes the spotlight with its sturdy, elongated frame and an extended rear rack, making it an ideal choice for those planning to transport two kids or more. However, this advantage comes with a slight drawback – a higher step-over height, making mounting and dismounting a bit more challenging compared to the Abound and Xpedition.

In contrast, the Abound and Xpedition opt for a more compact approach with foldable stems and handlebars, significantly enhancing their storage convenience. This design choice, while making them more approachable and easy to handle, can introduce a challenge on the passenger front. The shorter frames of the Abound and Xpedition may lead to heel-clipping issues with passengers, a concern not faced on the Radwagon.

So, in the world of cargo ebikes, the choice between the robust, spacious frame of the Radwagon and the more compact, foldable design of the Abound and Xpedition ultimately comes down to your specific needs and preferences. While the Radwagon may be less approachable due to its larger frame, it compensates with unparalleled stability, making it a solid option for those with a need for extra cargo space.

Which Cargo Ebike Offers the Best Payload Capacity?

Payload capacity is a crucial consideration, especially if you plan to carry substantial weight. Surprisingly, the smaller-framed Abound and Xpedition surpass the Radwagon in this area. The Lectric Xpedition handles up to 450 pounds, the Abound manages 440 pounds, while the beefier Radwagon caps at 350 pounds. Think about your specific cargo needs when making a decision.

Kickstands and Suspension

Kickstands may seem trivial until you encounter the thin, less sturdy stand on the Xpedition. In contrast, the Radwagon and Abound offer more robust options, a notable factor for bike stability during loading and unloading.

Suspension, a rare feature in affordable cargo ebikes, shines on the Abound, offering a more comfortable ride. It’s the sole bike among the trio to feature a front suspension and a dropper seat post, providing a more comfortable riding experience. If you’re prioritizing comfort, especially when carrying a heavy load, the Abound takes the lead.

Accessories and Extras

Now, let’s talk accessories and extras. All three manufacturers – Lectric, Aventon, and Rad Power Bikes – offer various accessories for their cargo ebikes. However, Aventon and Rad Power Bikes stand out for the extensive range and quality of accessories available. Notably, the Abound includes extra features like turn signals, a handy bag, and footboards, providing additional value for its price.

Personal Riding Experience: Power, Speed, and Range

Drawing from personal experiences, let’s break down the riding experience. In terms of power, the Abound and Xpedition outshine the Radwagon, especially when tackling inclines or carrying heavy loads. While the Lectric Xpedition boasts the highest top speed at nearly 20 miles per hour, in practice, the 20 mph cap on the Abound and Radwagon proved to be more than sufficient for everyday use.

Battery range becomes a crucial factor on longer rides, and here the Abound showcases its efficiency, delivering an impressive range on a single charge. The torque sensor in the Abound likely contributes to this enhanced efficiency, making it an excellent choice for those planning extended rides.

Our Favorite Electric Cargo Bike of 2023

In conclusion, each of these cargo ebikes caters to different needs. If you prioritize power, the Lectric Xpedition and Aventon Abound shine, with the latter offering extra features for added value. The Radwagon, though slightly behind in power, compensates with stability and a robust frame.

As for personal preference, the Aventon Abound steals the show, standing out as a favorite due to its torque sensor, safety features, and thoughtful extras. Regardless of your choice, each of these ebikes has its unique strengths, proving that the best cargo ebike is ultimately the one that aligns with your specific needs and preferences.
