KBO Hurricane 2 Review –
KBO is on a mission to make the “best value ebikes for all lifestyles” and the KBO Hurricane 2 is proof of that. We have been reviewing KBO electric bikes from the beginning and aside from making affordable ebikes they also stand out to us for another reason. Early on, they made the smart decision to offer lots of step-thru models to make their ebikes more accessible to all riders. They make everything from folding ebikes and fat tire ebikes to cruiser and city commuter ebikes, most of which are available in step-thru versions and all attractively priced.
The KBO Hurricane review, along with our KBO Breeze review, were two of our earliest Youtube videos. In our original KBO Hurricane review, we loved its stealthy design and appreciated that its 9.6Ah battery was bigger than similarly priced belt drive ebikes.
With the next-generation KBO Hurricane 2, you get an impressive entry-level electric bike that offers an affordable and enjoyable riding experience. Priced at $899, this single-speed ebike delivers a range of features that make it a compelling choice for beginners and those seeking simplicity and value. In this KBO Hurricane review, we will delve into the specifications, performance, and overall impression of this stealth ebike.

KBO Hurricane vs KBO Hurricane 2
KBO Hurricane | KBO Hurricane 2 | |
Battery | 36V, 9.6Ah Lithium-ion battery with Panasonic cells | 36V 10.5Ah Lithium-ion battery with Samsung/LG cells |
Motor | Sustained 250W brushless geared motor with 350W peak | Hub Motor: Sustained 350W brushless geared motor with 500W peak |
Drivetrain | Single speed belt drive | Single speed drivetrain with a chain |
The KBO Hurricane 2 features a 6061 aluminum frame, similar to its predecessor, ensuring durability and strength. However, the Hurricane 2 boasts a larger 36-volt, 10.5-amp-hour lithium-ion battery equipped with Samsung LG cells. This offers improved range compared to the original’s 36-volt, 9.6 amp-hour battery. The upgraded battery provides riders with a range of 18 to 53 miles, depending on the pedal assist level chosen.
In terms of the motor, the Hurricane 2 features a rear hub motor with 350 watts of nominal power and 500 watts of peak power, surpassing the original KBO Hurricane’s 350-watt nominal power rating. This upgrade translates into better performance on hilly terrains and improved acceleration.
In terms of design, the Hurricane 2 maintains the lightweight characteristic of the original, weighing 36 pounds. Maneuvering through crowded city streets or navigating tight corners becomes effortless and enjoyable. The bike’s straight handlebars provide a comfortable and upright riding position, while the adjustable handlebar height caters to individual preferences. This stealth ebike is recommended for riders between 5’6″ and 6’6″, making it suitable for a wide range of individuals.
Both KBO electric bikes feature mechanical disc brakes, with the Hurricane 2 having 160-millimeter discs, similar to the first Hurricane. While both models provide sufficient stopping power, it would have been nice if KBO upgraded the brakes in tandem with the rear hub motor upgrade. However, since this stealth ebike is still so affordable it would be easy to make that change yourself. That’s one of the things that’s nice about this bike, your initial investment is relatively small, leaving room for upgrades down the line if so desired.
One significant difference lies in the drivetrain. The original Hurricane featured a belt drive, which offers reduced maintenance and a quieter ride compared to traditional chain drives. However, the Hurricane 2 adopts a single-speed chain drive, providing a more familiar riding experience akin to traditional bicycles. This change simplifies maintenance and may appeal to riders who prefer the conventional feel of a chain-driven bike.
Test Riding the KBO Hurricane 2
Ride feel
The KBO Hurricane 2 excels in delivering a pleasant riding experience, particularly for urban commuting and adventures on paved bike paths. With its three levels of pedal assist, riders can choose their desired level of assistance, whether it’s a gentle boost or a more energetic ride. The bike’s motor provides adequate power, allowing riders to effortlessly maintain speeds of up to 20 mph, even on slight inclines.
The battery life of the Hurricane 2 is commendable, with a larger capacity than its predecessor. Riders can expect to enjoy longer rides before needing to recharge, and the bike offers a range that is suitable for everyday commuting needs. While it may not be suitable for extended hill climbing or challenging terrains, it performs admirably for short bursts and moderate inclines.
When it comes to performance, the KBO Hurricane 2 shines in its simplicity. The absence of gears and the inclusion of mechanical disc brakes allow for a straightforward and intuitive riding experience. While the brakes may not be from a renowned brand, they prove to be more than capable of providing reliable stopping power, given this ebike’s lightweight construction.
Customization and Future Upgrades
One of the standout features of all KBO electric bikes is their affordability. With a price tag of $899, the KBO Hurricane 2 presents an accessible entry point into the world of ebikes, making it an attractive option for first-time buyers. The cost-effectiveness of this ebike allows riders to allocate their budget towards accessories and upgrades that suit their individual preferences and needs.
While the stock components and features of the Hurricane 2 are more than adequate, the affordable price enables riders to invest in hydraulic disc brakes, brighter lights, an adjustable bike stem, or an upgraded seat, among other customization options. This versatility empowers riders to personalize their ebike, transforming it into a tailored machine that perfectly suits their riding style.
Final Thoughts
The KBO Hurricane 2 builds upon the strengths of its predecessor, offering improved performance and enhanced features. With a larger battery capacity, a more powerful motor, and a signature lightweight design, the Hurricane 2 provides a more enjoyable riding experience, especially on hilly terrains.
While it may lack certain premium features found in higher-end KBO electric bikes, the Hurricane 2 perfectly fits the criteria for affordability, simplicity, and approachability. With only three levels of pedal assist and a straightforward LCD display, there is no steep learning curve or complicated features to deal with. The bike’s minimalistic design further emphasizes its elegance and simplicity.
The KBO Hurricane 2 is an excellent choice for riders who appreciate lighter, single-speed ebikes. And at only $899 you won’t find many city commuter ebikes that are this fun, this stylish and this light on your wallet!
