With innovative, high-quality models like the Aventure.2 and Pace 500.3 they have models for almost any kind of rider. However, until this year they never had a cargo ebike. That has changed with the introduction of the Aventon Abound, an electric cargo bike unlike any we’ve seen before.

The Abound is currently priced at $1799 currently, down $400 from its original retail price of $2199. With the version I’m reviewing I’ve added a few extras, like a handy front basket, handrails for the kids, and two child seats – a Yepp Maxi for my three-year-old and a Qibble for the five-year-old. The Aventon Abound sets itself apart with its 20 by 4-inch tires on both the front and back, deviating from the typical single large or mixed tire configurations seen in other models.
The Abound impresses not just with affordability but also stands out for its practicality. Its design allows easy integration of accessories like a front basket, and compatibility with child seats enhances versatility, making it a well-rounded choice for those seeking functionality and personalization in their electric biking experience.
Look and Feel
The Aventon Abound stands out with its cargo-friendly design and low step-over height, catering to riders of different heights. Weighing 81 lbs, it supports a substantial total weight of 440 lbs, with 143 lbs on the rear rack. The double kickstand adds sturdy stability, a notable improvement over competitors like the Flyer L885 and Lectric Xpedition.
Notably, the bike includes unique stock features like a practical storage bag, integrated protectors, front and rear lights, metal fenders, and convenient footboards. This comprehensive set of features adds practical value to the bike without compromising its utility in the cargo ebike market.
Comfort
Comfort is prioritized when it comes to the Aventon Abound, thanks to its seat design- mimicking the qualities of a suspension seatpost. While not a full suspension, it adds cushioning for a smoother ride. This combination results in a notably comfortable experience, a standout feature for this cargo bike.
Additionally, the handlebars, though not as compact as some competitors, offer a folding feature for convenient storage. It’s not quite the space-saver that the Lectric Xpedition is, but the folding handlebars do make it a little easier to slide your bike in and out of your automobile and confined spaces in your garage.
LCD
The Aventon Abound’s cockpit features essential components such as rubber grips, a left thumb throttle, a Shimano Revo shifter, and a standard LCD screen. This screen, a consistent feature in Aventon bikes, not only provides vital ride information but also seamlessly syncs with the app. Despite a top speed limitation of 20 miles per hour, the app compensates by offering additional statistics, enriching the riding experience with valuable insights.
The integration of technology in the cockpit reflects Aventon’s commitment to practicality and user-friendly design. By prioritizing real-time information and maintaining a straightforward interface, the LCD setup on the Abound caters to riders who appreciate the fusion of convenience and functionality.
Main Specs – Motor/Battery/Brakes
Under the hood, the Aventon Abound sports a 750W motor with a torque sensor, offering a natural cycling feel. The 48V 15Ah battery provides ample range, as I comfortably covered 30 miles with 31% battery remaining.
The thoughtful inclusion of front suspension enhances the overall ride, providing a smooth and controlled cycling experience. Furthermore, the Aventon Abound stands out with Tektro hydraulic brakes, offering superior performance compared to standard mechanical brakes, found on many competitor models like the Radwagon 4 and the Flyer L885.
Aventon Abound Test Ride
Having covered almost 200 miles on the Abound, including lengthy trips and a camping expedition, it’s proven itself as a reliable companion. The torque sensor, a standout feature, ensures a smooth and efficient ride, especially when compared to the jumpy cadence sensors found in other affordable cargo ebikes like the Xpedition and the Radwagon 4.
What truly sets the Abound apart is its exceptional ride feel. The torque sensor not only offers a natural cycling experience but also enhances battery efficiency. On a camping trip carrying a substantial load, the bike showcased its prowess by covering 30 miles one way with only 45% battery usage.
Things I like
Aside from the aforementioned cadence sensor, this Aventon cargo bike impresses withits inclusion of premium features as standard. These extras, such as front suspension, hydraulic brakes, footboards, and integrated lights, elevate the overall riding experience without compromising affordability.
The Abound’s frame design is noteworthy for its low step-over height, making mounting and dismounting effortless. The sturdy double kickstand feels very high quality, ensuring stability when the bike is parked and carrying substantial cargo or small passengers .
In a nutshell, the Aventon Abound isn’t just another cargo ebike; it’s a well-designed, feature-packed ride that caters to all riders, whether you’re hauling cargo or cruising with little ones.
Things I don’t like
The Aventon Abound, despite its impressive features, comes with a few minor drawbacks. The foldable handlebars, though convenient, can feel a bit wobbly when dealing with a heavy load. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s worth keeping in mind. Additionally, the absence of an integrated dual battery option, a feature becoming more common in the market, might be a downside for some. Aventon does offer the option to purchase a second battery separately, but the lack of integration could be seen as a drawback.
Another consideration is its compatibility with kid bike trailers. When attaching a Burley Kid trailer, you must first remove the footboard. While this is a relatively small issue, it adds an extra step to the process, which might be less than ideal for those frequently using trailers with their cargo ebike. Despite these minor trade-offs, the Aventon Abound maintains its appeal, striking a balance between impressive features and performance.
Final Thoughts
Having explored the cargo ebike landscape for over two years, the Aventon Abound has firmly secured its place as one of my preferred choices in this category. The torque sensor, premium feel, and functional design make the Abound a standout in its class. For riders seeking an affordable cargo ebike that doesn’t compromise on features or performance, the Aventon Abound is a compelling option.
